Dead Man's Tunnel is the third book in Sheldon Russell's Hook Runyon mystery series. It is now near the end of World War II, shortly after the atomic bomb has been dropped on Japan and one-armed Yard Dog Hook Runyon and his dog, Mixer, are back. This time the caboose that serves as their cramped living quarters has been moved to the West's Salvage Yard in the high desert area of Arizona.
Sheldon Russell's descriptive and suspenseful writing has been called "terrific" and "outstanding" by The New York Times, was compared to a Clint Eastwood movie in The Denver Post, and was proclaimed a "thrilling ride" by the San Francisco Chronicle. Dead Man's Tunnel delivers the same expert-plotting and atmospheric setting as The Yard Dog and The Insane Train (both available in our shop), with an even more ominous historical backdrop.
SYNOPSIS || Not far away [from the salvage yard] is Johnson Canyon Tunnel. Though remote and ordinary as tunnels go, it is the gateway to the steepest railroad grade in North America and a potential bottleneck for the delivery of war supplies.
So vital is this tunnel to the war effort that a twenty-four-hour military guard has been assigned for the duration. It's the only guarded tunnel in the United States. No engines, not even the newly minted diesels, can climb this grade without pushers, which are kept at the ready.
Hook's orders are to catch copper thieves, while staying out of sight and out of trouble, but things go awry when Hook receives a call that one of the guards has been killed mid-tunnel by an oncoming train. Lieutenant Allison Capron from the Army Transportation Department is called in to help with the investigation.
At first, Hook and Capron suspect suicide by train, but the evidence soon suggest homicide resulting from a love triangle. Unable to fit his own findings into either of these theories, Hook suspects something more sinister, and the ensuing investigation will test his physical and mental limits.
