Bonanza tells the story of a prosperous family of ranchers who live on the thousand square mile Ponderosa Ranch during and after the Civil War. Widower, Ben Cartwright (Lorne Greene) is the head of this all-male household who has three sons by three different deceased wives.
Adam (Pernell Roberts), the eldest son, was the most serious of the brothers. Hoss (Eric), played by Dan Blocker, was the middle son and a gentle naive mountain of a man. The youngest son, Little Joe (Michael Landon) was impulsive and the most romantic of the Cartwright offspring. The stories of Bonanza deal with the adventures of these men, individually and collectively, and their relationships with the people whose paths they cross as they manage their vast mining and ranching interests.
